Gaining The Competitive Edge

In many ways, today, the workplace is very liberal. Everybody IS "Cutting everyone slack." The problem this creates is that expectations are lowered. At times, the work tone is one is which getting the job done now can become more important than getting the job done correctly or with complete integrity. The result, in some instances, has been sort of an "every person for themselves" environment. This has been an insidious phenomenon and , I think, a negative impact on our workplaces However, the great news is that anyone can have a competitive edge in such a setting.

Even greater is the news that anyone can have a competitive edge in any setting Rather than looking at the environment as something which derails your career, you can, by identifying your personal Auto-Reactions - seize the opportunity to rise to the next level. Rather than questioning whether you are rising to the level of your incompetence, you can realize your impossible dream! Careers are derailed not by environmental circumstances but by out- won internal, subconscious beliefs and performance set-points. Much like a metabolic set-point which controls weight, we each have performance set-points that determine our reactions to the environment. Tim Allen's television character is a bumbling know-it-all because of his beliefs, not because of his environment. Those around him, in the same environment do quite

Our performance is not governed by incompetence or inability. Nor is it controlled by other individuals. (Excepting actual subaverage intellectual ability, brainwashing and chemical potions.) Our Performance Set-point determines how, when, where, why and the quality of our conduct and behavior. Fortunately, the Performance Set-point can be programmed to complement our efforts, desires and goals. It is made up of a conglomerate of belief.,, which, automatically, causes is to behave in a particular manner to specific circumstances. I call these actions and behaviors Auto-Reactions because they are always the same and always automatic until we actually reprogram the accompanying beliefs.

These Auto-Reactions set off a chain of events in relation to an individual's environmental triggers for these Auto-Reactions. This experiences. Individuals and circumstances serve as triggers means, then, that we automatically and systematically exhibit the same reactions repetitiously. If a person is programmed to respond in a remonstrative manner, they will continue to bump into this belief system (Performance Set-point) until it is changed The details may be slightly different, but the dynamic remains the same. If you believe  your boss as a jerk you will always relate to your boss from a secondary position because you will expect erk-like behavior" from your boss. The problem is that you, not your boss, will be the loser.

By uncovering and reprogramming your Performance Set-point and therefore eliminating negative Auto-Reactions which limit performance, anyone can gain the competitive edge This means that you will be free to respond to your environment instead of reacting automatically. You will be freed to bring creativity and innovation to the table- Like Shrek you can gain the competitive edge.
